All of Netflix and Nintendo go offline when Amazon has problems

Amazon’s web-hosting subsidiary, Amazon Web Services, had major issues this week.
The outage had widespread ripple effects on a variety of services hosted by Amazon, from Netflix to Tinder.
It was the latest example of how much of the modern internet is dependent on a single company: Amazon.
Amazon’s web-hosting subsidiary, Amazon Web Services, suffered a major outage on Tuesday morning. For some folks, Alexa devices going down was the red flag. For others, it was their Ring doorbell not working, or their inability to load Netflix. For thousands of Amazon warehouse workers, it was evident when they were forced to stop working. Like the last time this happened just over a year ago, dozens of services were knocked out as a result of Amazon’s outage. Beyond Amazon’s own products, like Alexa and Ring, there are millions of people, companies, and government agencies that depend on Amazon’s widely used web hosting and cloud infrastructure. Netflix, for instance, uses AWS “for nearly all its computing and storage needs, including databases, analytics, recommendation engines, video transcoding, and more,” according to Amazon. But the services that Amazon’s AWS customers each use vary widely, from remote database software used for tracking business to remote storage for files and much more. Those customers include, but aren’t limited to, Netflix, Tinder, Nintendo, McDonald’s, Sweetgreen, Disney+, and Roku — all of which experienced issues on Tuesday. Amazon’s own e-commerce site was down for some, and its delivery drivers were unable to route deliveries. Amazon called it “an AWS service event that affected Amazon Operations and other customers,” in a statement to Insider. It was, in short, a total mess — the result of a surprisingly large group of major companies depending entirely on Amazon for base-level functionality. Though Amazon is most well-known for being the internet’s main storefront, the company’s web services arm is a behemoth in its own right. Like most things Amazon does, AWS is the biggest player in the cloud services market in the US. It continues to beat out competition from Microsoft and Google, among others and pulls in over $40 billion in annual revenue for the company. The division is so important to Amazon that its former leader, Andy Jassy, was chosen to succeed co-founder and longtime CEO Jeff Bezos this year. A critical part of the reason that AWS has been so successful, and why so many companies depend on it, is that Amazon was one of the first companies to invest in cloud computing services. For companies like Netflix, AWS may have been the only viable option when cloud services were required over a decade ago. Though Amazon has a variety of different server clusters across the US, the outage on Tuesday was specific to one data center — it affected the “US-East Region,” Amazon said, which is located in Virginia, and Americans all over the country were impacted. Maintenance and server administration is taken care for you
Cons:
Little or no control over server configuration
Traffic surges on other websites can slow down your website.

Think like this: you rent a flat in some building and you have a common porch, lift, stairs, parking, garden space, clubhouse. Now imagine all sounds perfect, but suddenly one day your near-flat member has a party and they are using the same lift, corridor, and parking. Now you want to go to the office and have problems going out because of this. When will it happen often then? And one day you throw a party and on the same day, few neighbors also throw the parties. Now it’s meshed. Then you think to improvise your life, you take a whole floor for yourself. This is called VPS, the next topic.

2. VPS Hosting: Virtual private server – you are still using a shared server but now you have an entirely separate partition for you on that server. This means you get a dedicated space and a reserved amount of resources and memory. It will understand by this that now you have your entire one floor in that building with the shared resources. This approach is great for medium-sized businesses with a rapidly growing number of websites and traffic.

Now imagine you rented a whole floor, but still for your parties parking space is limited, common lift, stairs to get into your floor. And some other floor members also have the same parties on their floor. Now things get so messy, the lift, stairs, and parking lot still have limited space. Now you think why not I rent the whole building, then every resource is owned by me. This is called dedicated hosting, the next topic.

3. Dedicated Hosting: In this, the server is exclusively rented by you and your website is the only one stored on it. Now you can configure your server as you wish, choose the operating system and software you want to use, and set up the whole hosting environment according to your own needs. In general, you can understand in this way that now you are renting the whole building.
Pros:
Full control over server configuration
High reliability and security options
Root access to your server
Cons:
High cost, more oriented towards larger businesses
Technical and server management knowledge is a must
Dedicated host fails, single point of failure.
Cannot increase/decrease the size of resources when needed.

You now have your own house, your own laws, and all the resources you need. You now have more people coming to your parties (or traffic, as it is known in server terms). You are seeing fewer people and you have less building space. This means that you cannot build a new floor or rent out a whole new building to accommodate them. It is also more expensive and will require agreements and time. It is a waste to rent the entire building out for parties. This means that you have the ability to increase or decrease your server space as needed. This is Cloud hosting. If I find someone like that, I don’t have to rent the entire building. You only pay for the space and time you use. It sounds promising. 4. Cloud Hosting:
As we talked about the features, renting resources as per the use case, and paying for used services only, no more resource wastage.
Pros:
Elasticity: scale up/down resources when needed
High reliability: no single point of failures
Concerned Security
High availability
Fault Tolerance
Pay as per used resources
Cons:
Need to understand networking
Need to manage resources by yourself.
Have knowledge of the security concerns well.
Need experts to manage cost management, as accidentally choose the expensive resources, while it won’t be useful for your use case.

In the market there are lots of cloud service providers, some of the popular providers are Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform(GCP), Digital Ocean, Linode, Alibaba cloud etc.

While the major concern is elasticities, scale up and down the resources as per the traffic, we can do it by horizontal & vertical scaling in terms of servers. We will discuss it in some other article.
